What are the ideal shoes for fencing? Can you just buy high-end fencing shoes from your local sports store, or do you instead go for a budget-friendly model? First, remember the dynamics of this sport. Fencing requires swift changes in direction, usually involving a lunge and a push, and the fencing push exerts a much greater force of upwards of 7 times that of the body-weight on the trailing heel. This means that the shoes that are chosen have to be extremely flexible yet tough, able to cope with the demands placed on them by these sudden movements.
The second thing to consider is comfort. A good set of shoes will have supportive heel-cups and arch supports to ease the pressure on the leading foot when it makes the lunge or the push. This can be supported further with leather uppers, in case you prefer a bit of colour. A few pairs of bright, colourful fencing shoes can also add some character to an otherwise grey or blue gauntlet.
Next comes fit. Fencing shoes should not be too tight, nor should they be too loose. A tight fit causes undue pressure around the joint where the toe joins the heel, and can cause long term damage to that area. On the other hand, a loose fit can lead to uneven wear across the sole of the shoe, and even make the movements of the foot complicated and unnatural. As well as this, the metal strips that give the fence the rigidity should not be too close together, or else the rubber will deteriorate quickly due to the action of the soles.
It is important to understand the main features of different types of shoes, so as to be able to choose the right pair. Fencing shoes are usually divided into two main categories, those that are designed for outdoor use, such as on a farm or near a swimming pool, and those that are designed for indoor use, which are most often seen on sports centres and as court shoes. Fencing is an activity predominantly carried out outdoors, so these shoes will normally be waterproof and therefore ventilated. They will also be stiffer than court shoes, to prevent the soles from slipping off during vigorous activity.
Fencing shoes tend to have two main features, and so can only be classified according to their construction. Full sole shoes are those with the sole of the shoe completely covering the end of the ankle. These offer the best protection, but are heavy, and thus more suited to outdoor uses, and especially for those carrying lighter weights. Lateral support is offered by a section of the sole known as the medial support. This offers good lateral support, but does not protect the ankle at all, and is therefore only used if the wearer is not wearing any other type of footwear.
Fencing shoes that come as a pair with a full rubber or hard heel cup are suitable for use in the gym and for training purposes. These will be stiffer than the other varieties, and therefore not suitable for use in normal daily activities. A hard heel cup also has the advantage of offering extra cushioning to the lower legs, especially where the lunge tends to occur. This is especially important when one receives a nasty fall whilst wearing this type of footwear, and can reduce bruising considerably.
There are many designs for this type of footwear, and can come in a wide range of colours. One of the main factors to consider when purchasing a new fencing shoe is the level of comfort that it offers. Most fencing shoe manufacturers offer a range of cushioned shoe options, ranging from memory foam to latex. Each of these will provide a degree of support that is specific to the wearer's individual needs.
One of the most popular varieties of this type of shoe is the Asics Gel Stick Fencing Shoes. As well as being used on the training ground, the Asics Gel Stick Fencing Shoes are great for everyday wear. The Asics Gel Stick Fencing Shoes are made of the toughest artificial material around, and can offer outstanding ankle support and cushioning. They are available in a range of colours and are extremely comfortable to wear. As with all the different types of footwear that Asics produce, they are produced with the highest quality standards, and so should always be top of the range.
