Waterproof Shoes Buying Guide

Hiking shoes are designed to be waterproof in order to provide the wearer with maximum comfort. Waterproof shoes are constructed of materials such as neoprene, leather, and rubber. Although many people prefer the more expensive varieties, many inexperienced hikers simply purchase any shoe that is available to them at the store. However, it is wise to educate yourself about the various types of shoes and which one is the best choice for your needs.

The type of material used in waterproof shoes plays an important role in the comfort they provide. Neoprene is the most common material used in outdoor footwear. It is made up of a synthetic plastic compound. It is resistant to a variety of chemicals and performs exceptionally well in high temperatures. Neoprene is an excellent choice for those hikers who plan on spending long periods of time out in the woods or other damp areas.

Leather is typically a lighter option than neoprene, but is not as resistant to abrasion and does not breathe as well. It has a natural advantage over the former because it is often more resistant to stains and does not retain as much water. On the down side, leather is more expensive and does not wear quite as well. Waterproof leather shoes usually include additional features such as extra breathability and special outsoles. Many hiking clubs and organizations mandate the use of the proper shoes when out in the woods.

Waterproof shoes are manufactured using several different types of outer materials. Most commonly used is nylon, as it is highly durable and lightweight. Nylon can be dyed to match any color or pattern, providing the hiker with additional comfort and functionality. Certain synthetics do not breathe well and thus must be treated accordingly. Nylon is inexpensive and very durable.

Goretex is a common alternative to neoprene and is made from a material that is breathable and will dry extremely quickly. There are two primary types of Goretex - a wicking type or performance material. Performance material has additional properties such as being flame retardant, preventing burning of both the fabric and the shoe, and eliminating external condensation from forming on the surface of the shoe. Wicking is a type of Goretex that allows moisture to escape from the shoe, which in turn allows perspiration to evaporate more easily.

Although Gore Tex and other similar products are primarily designed for walking and hiking, there are many other situations where their abilities are utilized. For example, some fire fighters, police officers, and other emergencies personnel wear boots that are resistant to chemicals and flammables. Waterproof shoes are highly resistant to acid attacks. They can also resist mildew and chlorine. Moreover, they are able to keep feet free of blisters and irritations.

Waterproof shoes come in a wide range of sizes, styles, and designs. Moreover, different materials make each of them stand out and offer a unique set of features. Nylon is a lightweight choice that offers excellent water permeability while still maintaining a light feel and low weight. Gore Tex, on the other hand, is considered one of the most resilient and long lasting waterproof materials available today. However, nylon is not completely waterproof. Waterproof shoes come in several other materials such as leather, suede, and waterproof vinyl.

Waterproof shoes come in a wide variety of prices. In addition, they come in various colors and designs to meet your tastes and requirements. However, one of the primary considerations in choosing the best pair is how easily they can be cleaned. Cleaning these shoes is relatively simple: all you have to do is wipe them down with a damp cloth. Also, consider buying shoes with anti-slide soles in order to avoid slips and falls.
